Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not a side initiative at BILT. They are the work itself.

Built at the Intersection

Since 2019, BILT has worked at the intersection of systems that rarely talk to one another: DDS, ABA, mental health, human services, and education — from a headquarters fittingly located at Woburn’s Four Corners.

Our President and CEO, Christina Gravina, saw incomplete infrastructure across all of those systems. She made it her life’s mission to repair it, fortify it, and build new possibilities in the gaps — with compassion at the forefront.

BILT engages directly and positively with each individual, carefully mapping progress, strengths, and areas for growth. Our services are designed around unique needs and aimed at the highest level of independence each person can reach.

That work compounds. It empowers our staff, inspires our board, and draws new people who want to make the most of their time and potential in a flexible, inclusive, positive workplace.

Our Commitment

We are committed to creating and sustaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for our staff and for the individuals we serve. Diversity is not only a value we hold — it is a driver of innovation, creativity, and better outcomes.

We are action-oriented. We are taking concrete steps to ensure our workplace culture, policies, and practices reflect that commitment.

We also recognize that achieving true equity and inclusion is an ongoing process, not a finished project. We expect to keep learning and keep improving.

How We Put It Into Practice

We assess ourselves regularly

We conduct regular assessments of our workplace culture, policies, and practices to identify where we can improve and to confirm our DEI efforts are actually working.

We share the accountability

Our Board of Directors, Human Resources, management, and leadership are each charged with upholding DEI in everything we do. It is not one department’s job.

We build it into hiring and retention

Our policies and practices are designed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in how we recruit, hire, and retain staff.

We support our people

Every BILT staff member is treated fairly and equitably and has access to the resources and support they need to thrive here.

We serve every client equitably

We provide high-quality care to all clients regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics — and we work to eliminate disparities in outcomes.

We stay adaptable, and we stay resolute

We remain deliberate and mindful of the many vantage points on DEI and its impact on our industry, while keeping the people we serve ahead of everything else.

Our People

Staff

BILT’s team reflects the range of people we support and the communities we work in. Women make up the majority of our staff, of our management and leadership team, and of our Board of Directors. Our team and our board both include people from a range of racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Our staff and volunteers include neurotypical and neurodivergent team members alike — a perspective that makes our work better, not just more representative.

We review the composition of our staff, leadership, and board as part of our regular DEI assessment, and current figures are available to funders, partners, and prospective employees on request.

Languages

Business at BILT is conducted primarily in English, and several staff members are multilingual and available to assist with translation as needed. Languages spoken include:

American Sign Language · Arabic · French · Polish · Portuguese · Spanish · Swedish

Members of our Board of Directors also speak Spanish at varying levels of fluency.

The Communities We Serve

BILT supports nearly 150 low-to-moderate-income individuals across Essex, Middlesex, Suffolk, and Norfolk counties in Massachusetts.

In regions where access to personalized disability services is limited, BILT plays a critical role in bridging that gap with high-quality, person-centered care.
